Mostly straight

Had an interesting conversation with Gia earlier today. We were in the car and listening to Ron & Fez on XM and someone on the show said something like "that's absolutely wrong". And so we started talking about if something can be absolutely wrong or absolutely right. Not the idea, but the use of the word "absolutely" in front of right or wrong. Isn't it enough to say that something is right or wrong without qualifying how right or how wrong that something is?

In other words are their degrees of right and wrong? Or is their just right and wrong without any qualifiers?

Hmm.

Then we started to think of other examples. And one of them was gay and straight. Can someone be a little gay or really straight? I know some folks like to test the waters and do a little swimmin', if ya know what I mean. And I certainly know a few dudes who might be a little gay without actually jumping in, if that is possible.

And then Gia said that she thinks that someone can be a little gay or really straight, but that it might also be possible that some people who consider themselves really straight are probably at least a little gay.  You know, over-compensating and all.  So they went so far to the straight side that they may have wound up a bit on the nude gay beach.  Or that they secretly want to go swimming there, at least.

I think she's right.

And I'll always have to admit to being a little gay.  If only for my man-crushes on Nathan Fillion, Mark Harmon and Dave Grohl

Otherwise, all man.  That's me.  :)

PS - Do NOT do a Google Image search for "mostly straight" with SafeSearch off, by the way.  Unless, that is, you're a little gay.  Just sayin'.

I would bet on the tiger

So, apparently, in California a tiger cub and a young dolphin have become friends at a Six Flags Amusement park.

I don't know whether or not the tiger just wanted to eat the dolphin or if they actually dig each other.

But I want to believe it is true.

How.
Fucking.
Adorable.

Crap! I missed it.

Last Friday was World Nude Day. Who knew?

Actually, it's mostly just a bunch of freaks down in New Zealand, but they are trying to spread the word of peace, love and nudity to the rest of the freaks in the world. That sure was nice of them.

You can click on that link to check out some videos that were sent in to celebrate the festive day, but I warn ya...it's mostly the fellas that get in the all together. Something for the ladies, you know.

And Slyde, of course.

(Yes...that was a preemptive strike against my friend of many years. It only serves to lessen the inevitable blow of him calling me gay in the comments for posting a website that features male nudity. What can I say? I'm weak. Let's see if he takes the high road. - Earl)

Michael Clayton

Had a fun time in the city with Gia this weekend. We went in on Friday night and didn't get home until late last night. Found some great, fairly inexpensive restaurants (here and here) right around our friend's apartment building, and we spent a few hours downtown at one of the newer "speakeasy" joints in town called Death & Company on Saturday night. Check out that drink menu. Yum!

But one of the highlights of the weekend was yesterday afternoon when we watched Michael Clayton, finally. I say "finally" because we've had the DVD at home for about 2 weeks now, but we hadn't had the time to sit and watch it together.

This was a fantastic film, people. If you haven't seen it yet, give 'er a go. The acting was absolutely outstanding. George Clooney, Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson were all truly deserving of their Oscar nominations, and all three could have won...in my opinion. I haven't seen the film with Daniel Day-Lewis yet, and he is something special in everything he does, but I find it hard to believe that he was THAT much better in that film than Clooney was in this. Simply fantastic.

So, after much deliberation, I think I have added George Clooney to the small list of men (Nathan Fillion, Dave Grohl and Mark Harmon) that I would turn gay for.

Congratulations, George!

PS - I was gonna steal this pie chart from Antonia, but I figured I would just mention it so you can go over and laugh for yourself. - Earl

Sobbin' Women

I'm about to admit to something as a man with a staunch record of strict heterosexuality.

I love musicals!

Well, some musicals. I'm a big fan of the old Rodgers and Hammerstein kinda stuff. Oklahoma, South Pacific, Meet Me in St. Louis (not a R&H production), etc... I've never really liked West Side Story. Too much fucking drama in that one. And Baz Luhrmann can suck my balls, but only if he asks me really nice.

Nope. I like me a little camp in my musicals. And there may not be any musical out there with as much camp value as my favorite. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

This one has it all. Here's a brief plot synopsis. In mid-19th century Oregon, a mountain man heads into town to buy some feed, some farm equipment, and...oh yeah...get himself a wife. He actually convinces the lovely Jane Powell to marry him after a courting period of, oh, 3 or 4 hours. He then takes her back to his cabin where she discovers that he lives with six adult brothers, and she has to take care of them all. Not sexually. That would be a different movie. After the boys realize what a goll-durned great thing it is to have a woman around they decide to head into town and kidnap the gals they want. Just like the Romans did to the Sabine women in days of yore. Wackiness ensues.

Wow. Reading that back makes it seem like kidnapping them was not a good thing, huh?

Well, the boys lucked out. Because after being stranded with them in the mountains over the winter, each girl just happened to fall in love with the man who kidnapped them. Phew! See...good things happen to good kidnappers. It all worked out in the end for our mountain men/criminals.

Here's a clip showing the oldest brother (Howard Keel) convincing the boys to kidnap their prey by referencing Plutarch's Life of Romulus. Ah, those wacky Romans!

One more thing: The censors weren't too happy about the line in the song "Lonesome Polecat" where the brothers lament "A man can't sleep when he sleeps with sheep". By not showing any sheep in the same shot as the brothers, the film-makers were able to get away with it. Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!! Genius!
