Breakfast for Dinner

Long-time readers here know that I have a passion for breakfast. It's my favorite meal of the day. By far.  Nothing like some coffee, some eggs, some bacon, a biscuit...and oh yeah, my new passion, grits!

When I visit a new city for the first time one of the first things I do is scope out the best breakfast joints in town.  I like a place that's off the beaten path.  Someplace that isn't too tourist-y, of you know what I mean.  I like a place that the locals go to eat when they get off work.  It doesn't have to be fancy, hell...the less fancy the better.  I mean, there is a time and a place for a foo-foo breakfast.  Sure.  But most times, give me an old greasy spoon diner* and I'm happy.

*Quick interlude:  I may have mentioned this before, but one of my all-time favorite breakfast joints was a place I will probably never find again somewhere around Toledo, Ohio.  I was in the middle of a vacation where some friends and I were visiting baseball stadiums through the Minnesota/Illinois/Michigan/Ohio area.  We were waiting for a transfer at the train station and we had a couple of hours to kill.  So we walked around the area for a bit and found an old greasy spoon diner.  But the breakfast we had there was magical!  Home-made breakfast sausage that they formed into patties right before us, great coffee and great eggs.  Man, I wish that joint were just around the corner.  Hell, I don't even know the name of the place or exactly where it was.  But that day...it was the best.

So last night while pondering the daily question of what to have for dinner I made a decision.  Breakfast for dinner.  I hadn't eaten a really good breakfast since we came back from Charleston.  One of the first trips to the grocery store when we came back netted us some good old fashioned grits.  But they sat there for over a week, just waiting for me to make 'em.  No instant grits, by the way.  Real hominy grits.

So I made some creamy, cheesy grits with some horseradish cheddar, some eggs over-easy, some crisp bacon, some sliced grilled tomatoes and some buttered English Muffins.

Best. Dinner. Ever.

What about you?  You dig on some breakfast for dinner every now and again?

Well now... all borders are broken, no boundaries are fixed. Today we speak the same language.

The international language of the fry! I hold my spatula up in honour to you sir.

Over easy.... yeahhh.

Most definitely - I would eat that now (11pm here). Love cafes that do beakfast all day. But I gotta ask, what do Americans mean when they talk about "grits" and "biscuits"?

I really dig mushrooms (rydz/saffron milk caps), wilted spinach, avocado, fried tomato, gooey poached eggs and most of all boiled kielbasa.

Oh Oh Yes! I love me some breakfast for dinner. And breakfast is my favorite meal of the day as well. I don't care if its cereal, oatmeal, eggs, waffles, pancakes, I love it all!!!

By the way, what time is breakfast over at Earl's house? I may have to stop by for some cheesy grits!

Breakfast for dinner is ok. However, I'm more of a dinner for breakfast kinda guy. By "breakfast," I mean first meal, and by "dinner," I mean cold pizza. Between that and soggy salad, there is nothing better.

I LOVE breakfast for dinner! In fact, I think we'll have that tonight, complete with pancakes. Thanks! :D
My favorite restaurant breakfast was some place in Jersey... some family place that got a ton of business and also catered. I can't remember the name! But I loved their chicken apple sausage, and even looked into getting some shipped to me. If I remember the name of it I'll come back. Good stuff.

AK - Grits are a thick corn-product porridge, similar to polenta. And biscuits are biscuits, c'mon! Mushrooms, by the way, ruin any meal they appear, in my book.

Michelle - I haven't had waffles in forever. Gonna have to remedy that.

Doggie - Well, I love me some cold pizza first thing in the morning. Or afternoon. Depending upon when you wake up, ya see...

Sybil - Yum, chicken apple sausage! Love stuff like that.

Slyde - Real wrath of God stuff!

I love breakfast for dinner. I don't know why we Americans think of eggs as breakfast-only food though. In Europe, people eat eggs for any meal.

i eat what i want, when i want. so that means traditional breakfast foods for dinner are normal for me, just as leftovers, traditional lunch foods, become terrific breakfasts. although most of my coworkers disagree...for some reason they get angry when i have pork and sauerkraut at 8 am.
