The 100th Avatar Review You've Read

But it's not gonna stop me.

Slyde and I had a movie date on Friday morning.  Bright and early...9 AM was when we met at a mutually convenient IMAX theater to be the first kids on the block to see James Cameron's Avatar.  Well, the second kids on the block to see Avatar.  Some folks saw it the night before at midnight.  Those dirty stay-ups.  And it's a good thing we decided to see the earliest showing of the day.  The line was massive for the next showing when we left the theater.

Anyway, since this is probably the 100th review of this film that you all have come across, I'm not gonna bother with any summary of the plot or give you any spoilers.  You've probably either seen the film by now or read those spoilers.  Or you have seen big Hollywood films before and you aren't going to need any spoilers.

Because the only negative thing I can really say about this movie is that the plot wasn't very original.  You've all heard of all the films that basically run with the same plot and there was nothing new and exciting plot-wise for this film.  It's all true.  Right from the very beginning of the film I knew what was coming next.  It was all so telegraphed.  Plot point A leads to B which leads to C which eventually leads to the inevitable X.

But you know what?  I don't give a rat's ass!

Because this was easily one of the greatest film experiences of all-time!

The IMAX 3-D was ridiculous.  The sound and the sights...they really defy description.  I don't know about everyone else, but I felt like I was actually in the movie at certain points.  Like I had to take the 3D glasses off for a moment and look around to remind myself that I was watching a movie in a theater.  Thankfully I didn't do that very often.  Well, I did have to run to the Men's Room at one point.  It's a fucking long movie, y'all!

Since there was so much on the technical side that was new and exciting it was almost necessary that the plot was familiar.  It was comforting and it was handled really well.  The film was exciting and funny and heart-wrenching and everything else that you want from an epic film like this.  It was absolutely amazing in just about every single way.

I can't wait to see it again.  And again.  And again.

Thanks Earl, you've never steered me wrong yet. Consider me on line for this one at the first opportunity.

i saw it in 3d xd and immediately upon credits rolling asked if the boys would go see it in imax 3d with me. that fucking film was spectacular and a true "movie experience" that i will never forget.

i'm so glad that you are also in the camp with me about not caring that the plot had been done before. it is almost 2010 for fuck's sake...most plots have been done before!

Candy - you see, the thing is the experience. The big theater with the big sound and the IMAX 3D. Watching this at home just won't be the same.

MikeB- I hope you love it.

Slyde - Will it include any mention of you trying to feel me up during the film? Because that's really not very sexy.

Becky - Yeah, like I said it was almost comforting in a way how familiar the story was. Like an old t-shirt.

El Duderino - No.

Wabbit - It beats working at that time, right?

I saw it in 3d but not at an Imax theater. I'd like to see it at an Imax next.

And what pisses me off is that the non 3D movie was $9 and the 3D was $14. AND they ask you to "recycle" the glasses.

So why do they charge an extra $5?

As for the movie, it was great!

Zibbs - we paid $16 for the IMAX 3D show. Totally worth it!

I agree totally on this. While not a 'great' film in the sense of some past epics (Ben Hur, Titanic, American Beauty), this is a very, very good film. More so for the leap forward it makes in cinema technology and scope. Since I am one of the bastards that went to the midnight movie showing of this film, at an Imax, I really can't imagine seeing it in 2D on a regular cineplex screen. It would lost most of its effect. As Earl states, after a while, it was easy to get literally 'lost' in the picture and pretend you were IN the movie. The film is 2 hours and 40 minutes long with no intermission, but I had no problem staying glued to my seat watching it.

I saw it on Saturday because the boy I was with this weekend wanted to go. I dug the 3D effects and the story was pretty cool.
Sigourney Weaver's acting though- was deplorable. I was shocked that such a talented lady wouldn't be able to pull of a few lines here and there.
But it didn't ruin the experience for me. I want to ride around on a huge freaking dino bird now.

Agreed. I'm going to go see it in IMAX 3D now.

Damn it I was ripped off.

Bruce - while we may disagree on Titanic being a "great film" (I don't think it was), we both seem to agree on this one.

Tabbie - I didn't really notice any bad acting on Sigourney's part. Then again, a little bad acting could have slipped through the cracks easily.

Avitable - well worth it.

Zibbs - I wonder what the difference truly is.

It's good to know there are others out there that share the same "the plot wasn't original but the movie was awesome" thoughts about AVATAR. And I only saw it in regular 2D.

I've only read 36 reviews of the movie. lol
