Not Now

Here is a brief list of movies that I want to see RIGHT NOW that aren't available on Netflix Instant, or should I just say Netflix.  They are all films that I have looked for just in the past 24 hours.
  • No Country For Old Men
  • Mother
  • Or really any Albert Brooks movie besides Dr. Doolittle
  • Badlands
  • Eastern Promises
  • A History of Violence
  • Burn After Reading
  • Paths of Glory
  • The Natural
  • Sideways
I've seen them all before.  Except for Dr. Doolittle.  But, for some reason, I had a hankerin' to watch all of them again.  And I can't.  I mean, without paying Amazon or my local cable provider.  Or sailing the seven seas.  Sucks.

I can't remember the last time I checked to see if a movie was available on Netflix and it actually was available.  Good thing they have a bunch of TV shows that we are in the middle of watching right now.  Otherwise this 24 hours of searching fruitlessly might have been the end of our relationship.

I'm talking about Netflix and I.

You kids aren't going anywhere.  Don't you go changing. Wink.

5 Netflix Instant Recommendations

This one is gonna be interactive, kiddies.  First, I'll give you five title recommendations that are currently available on Netflix Instant.  Then you, at least those of you who use Netflix, supply me with five more recommendations in the comments section.  Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy.

  1. The Way of the Gun - FINALLY available to the Internets!  No, it's not high art.  But it is a whole mess o' fun.  Dig as Benicio del Toro and Ryan Phillipe fuck some shit up as a modern-day Butch and Sundance.  Hell, just watch it for the first 5 minutes of the film which features a potty-mouthed Sarah Silverman. It's...glorious.
  2. Calvin Marshall - I spoke about this one last week on our radio show that I'm sure you are all listening to each week.  Ahem.  It's a small film, the kind that studios don't seem to make all that often anymore.  Sure, baseball is the background to the story, but it's more about small towns and growing up and dealing with life.  Great acting all around in this little gem.
  3. Marwencol - I actually haven't watched this one yet, but it's in my queue, raring to go. It's a documentary about a man who was left brain damaged after a savage beating who communicates through elaborate dioramas he builds of a fictional town called Marwencol. From just about every review I've read, this one is supposed to be awesome.
  4. Torchwood - This one is a British television series...a spin-off of Doctor Who, actually.  But much more sophisticated and adult-themed than it's predecessor.  Just as much fun, though.  The first three series (seasons) are available on Netflix right now, and the fourth series should be available this Summer as it airs new on Starz Play each week.  I've written about this show before, and it's one of my all-time favorites.  You don't need to be a fan of the Doctor to enjoy it.
  5. The Crazies - The 2009 remake of the 1973 George Romero classic.  You know what I mostly hate about some of the newer horror flicks out there? It's that feeling that no one would really act that way under those circumstances.  Like carrying around a video camera while battling for your life.  I never had that feeling while watching this film. That's why I think it's a near-perfect entry in the genre.  And Timothy Olyphant is just dreamy, of course.
Your turn, whack-jobs!  Do it to it.

Five Star Cinema

On his blog yesterday, Joe Posnanski listed his Top 100 films of all-time. I was impressed.  Not with the quality of the films he selected, and I would share his views on many of them.  No...I was impressed with simply being able to sit down and come up with a Top 100 list of films.  There are so many to choose from, and the mind sometimes forgets the odd classic here and there.  And I love movies in general, so paring it down to just 100 (or 50 or 20 or, gasp, 10!) would seem to be an impossible task for me.

Then I remembered something.  I'm an obsessive rater.  I'm constantly rating and re-rating films on sites like IMDB.  The rule is: if I look something up on IMDB, I rate it.  That's it.  Easy peasy.  Aha...but there are a lot of films that I've seen that I've never looked up for one reason or another.  And I'm certainly not going to go spend a week doing that now.

Then I remembered something else.  I already have.  Not on IMDB, but on Netflix.  You see, when we first got a Netflix account I spent a weekend going through their database rating everything that I've seen.  Why?  Because they have an internal logic function that reviews what you have rated and comes up with new suggestions all the time.  I have no idea how some of them come up based on what I've seen, but there it is.   The rating system is pretty simple:
  • 1 star = Hated it
  • 2 stars = Didn't like it
  • 3 stars = Liked it
  • 4 stars = Really liked it
  • 5 stars = Loved it

So I went to my Netflix account and simply looked at all my rated titles.  3,771 of them, if you must know.  And I picked the ones that I had rated with 5 stars.  Now, this doesn't mean that I think all of these films are the works of artistic genius.  It's just how I felt in that particular millisecond that I was rating them.  Take the first film on my list...The 13th Warrior.  It's pure cheese and I'm not sure Antonio Banderas is convincing as an Arab nobleman at all, but I love it.  I love anything that plays with mythology and old tales.  So it gets 5 stars in my book.  For the record, I gave it 8 out of 10 stars on IMDB using their rating system.

I only included theatrical releases here.  No made-for-TV films or television shows. No documentaries either, as I had a bunch of them rated with 5 stars too.   And it made for a nice tidy list of 218 films.  Are they all masterpieces?  No way.  Some of them are not even close.  And I have to believe that there are a bunch that I'm missing.  Especially some of the older titles.  I don't know if Netflix just isn't carrying them or I skipped over them for some reason.  Either way, I'm not going back and re-doing this.  No way.

So feel free to review this huge list and let me know what you think.  Do any of them stand out one way or the other?  Any you have questions about?  Any of these you are dying to see?  Any of these choices that disgust you?  Was this a huge waste of time?  Speak up!

Knocked Up (NSFW-ish)

No...not me or Gia.

Just watched the film, and it was hi-larious.

Actually, we just signed up for NetFlix and I plan on seeing lots and lots more films in the next few weeks. I've already rated over 1,500 films thus far in their catalogue and I am perusing all the goodies in their suggestion bin for our viewing pleasure.

Got some good stuff in our queue (one of my favorite words) as well. Well, I hope they are good. Half Nelson, Shortbus, This is England, Battle Royale, Severance, Stardust, Dead Man and a whole lot more.

A question for those of you who are NetFlix veterans. Is mucking about with the community features worthwhile at all? Just curious.

Note - I kinda disapprove of the above pic, but I have a strict rule about posting the first freaking pic that catches my eye when searching for shit to post on my blog. So there you go. Enjoy.
