Enthusiasms

"Life goes on.

A man becomes preeminent, he's expected to have enthusiasms. Enthusiams...enthusiasms.

What are mine? What draws my admiration? What is that which gives me joy?

Baseball!

A man. A man stands alone at the plate. This is the time for what? For individual achievement. There he stands alone. But in the field, what? Part. Of. A. Team.

Looks, throws, catches, hustles. Part of one big team. Bats himself the live-long day, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and so on. If his team don't field...what is he? You follow me? No one.

Sunny day, the stands are full of fans. What does he have to say? I'm goin' out there for myself. But...I get nowhere unless the team wins."

De Niro as Capone uttered these wise words as a prelude to beating one of his top men to death with a baseball bat.

I know how he feels.

The Yankees are out of the playoffs for the first time since 1993 (they didn't have a post-season in '94). I know...we Yankee fans have been spoiled with the best teams money can buy over these last 15 or so years. It still sucks.

Now all I have to root for is another September implosion by the Mets. And two teams from the AL East are in the playoffs as well. Joy. Joy. So I guess I can root against the Rays as well as the fucking Nation.

Right now, I just feel like beating an underling to death with a baseball bat.

(I've seen this picture with the kid wearing a Sawx jersey too...so it's probably been photo shopped a bunch of times. I like the sentiment, though. Even if Boston clearly doesn't suck. Sigh. - Earl)

Strangely, I feel much the same when it comes to the Twins. Assholes.

b.e. i sure wish i had your enthusiasm for a sport like you do! Baseball in particular since it really is such a team oriented sport. Instead, i like to watch running! Boring to some, but very exciting to me! Go figure!

RW - I'd prefer the Twinkies in the playoffs over the hated Sawx.

Michelle - being a baseball geek ain't all its cracked up to be.

i too hope the mets implode soon.

then maybe all you NY baseball jackoffs can stop talking about it every day morning in my office!

Slyde - Won't work. Then we talk about what went wrong, who's gonna get fired, free agents, trades, etc... Like the Terminators, we can't be stopped.

Baseball is on my list of things to see before I die.

One question though.. why is the World Series called the World Series? Is it not just American teams who take part?

Verdant Earl said...

Bollix - because we Americans are a bunch of condescending pricks. Also because the term was coined in the 1880's originally as the World's Championship Series. Baseball, as a professional sport, was limited to the USA at that point. It was later shortened to World Series, and that has been what it has been called since the first "modern" Series in 1903. Sounds a little haughty now since the Far East, Mexico, the Caribbean and many, many other areas play the game at a pretty high level, but they ain't gonna change it any time soon. See what you can learn here at the Bug-Eyed Blog? :)

I'll be at Fenway Sunday. I'll boo the Sox for you.

But I'm drinking the Guinness for me.

Limpy - Thank you. Hopefully the weather holds out for you (supposed to be a rainy weekend) and that Mussina gets his long overdue 20th win on Sunday. Have fun and many, many Guinnesses (Guinessi?)!

I'm not in to baseball, but I do respect the kid flipping the finger.

Actually the kid gets dressed in all the different baseball teams and gives the bird. It really is an art that he does.

Heff - that kid is getting a head start on life.

Ookami - So he's a renaissance kid!

Well now I know.. thanks.

I've seen the kid in a Cowboys jersey as well. It has become an all purpose sports pic like 'Who let the dogs out?' has become an all purpose sports song.

Evyl - I just wanna know what that red shit is on the right side of his face. Did he just slaughter a cow?
