Last week when I wrote about forgotten foods, intrepid food reporter Sybil Law mentioned that she used to love something called Penrose sausage. A jarred sausage treat that she would enjoy on crackers with her father. I don't know what it was about it, but it spoke to me. I checked it out and you can still buy Penrose sausage online, but while I was searching for them I found the website for Long Lake Pickled Foods out of Northeastern Wisconsin.
And I fell in love.
The entire catalog made my mouth water. Even the pickled pork hocks. And I don't even really know what the fuck a pork hock is. I still wanted some. Pickle that shit and put it in a jar. I'll take it.
So after little to no thought on the matter, I made my first purchase.
I went with the hot pickled polish sausage and red hot pickled egg combo. I've never had a pickled egg before, but I've seen a bunch of films and TV shows that feature them in old man bars. Some drunk gets hungry and he reaches his grubby paw into a grubby jar and eats an egg. I was always semi-fascinated by that.
My bounty arrived in the mail today. The company actually goofed up and sent me two jars of pickled eggs, so I called them up pronto to let them know about it. A nice man called me back and told me to to keep the extra eggs on the house and he would send me the hot polish sausage lickety split.
So I'm gonna wait to try the eggs until I recieve the sausage. Then all bets will be off.
I'll let you know how it all works out. Or you may be able to smell the evidence from the comfort of your own homes.
Beware.
PS - The Greenlawn Pickle Fesitval is on Saturday, September 26th year. Be there and be square.

No sir, you are correct. there is nothing better than a pickle.
i guess for nostaglia foods, it doesn't get much better than sitting on the floor, all crossed legged with my brother watching the league of justice. or what ever that show was with all the superheros working out of centralized hub.
the food?
why triple chocolate doughnuts. Chocolate casing, chocolate stuffing and chocolate coating on top.
the beverage?
why, white chocolate milk of course!
yet, no, all this really does pale in the face of the pickle.
:)
let's us know how it goes :)
Love pickles... not a big fan of pickled eggs, however.
Yeah, pickled things are nummy. I throw raw veggies in a pickle jar when it's empty. After pickles, my favorite is pickled beets. I ate pickled eggs in England and loved them!
Not sure about that sausage though...
Huge catering size jars of pickled eggs used to sit on the counter of fish and chip shops here in Glasgow back in the 70's.
We once bet a pal of ours that he couldn't drink the remaining contents of the vinegar jar (nearly 30oz) of stale, cloudy, out of date syrup, which still housed half a pickled egg, plus an odd stray pubic hair.
The bet was for £40, and he drank the lot.
Needless to say he was puking for nearly an hour after the deed.
Happy days!
I'm skeeeered.
Seriously, picked pig hocks? This whole pickling thing doesn't sound yummy to me so I cannot wait to read your reviews!
Holly - I've never had white chocolate milk. Never even heard of it. Wow.
Dave2 - I love all thinks pickled, so I'm assuming I will love the eggs. But I still haven't tried them yet.
Steph - Pickled beets, eh? Hmmm.
Jimmy - That's one of those bets where you just know someone is gonna wind up puking.
Hilly - I may have gone a bit overboard about the pig hocks. I was too skeeeered to order them as well.
i've tried just about everything pickled, even the hocks, but never eggs. i'll have to try it sometime. Oh yeah, I have heard a mutual friend speaking of pickle park...
I have never tried a pickled egg in my life, and I really don't think pickled pork hocks sounds good. In fact, it makes me kinda ill.
But the sausages I had as a kid were GOOOOD. Can't wait to see if you like the ones you ordered!!!
2abes - what's "pickle park"?
Sybil - I blame you if this turns out badly. ;)
Better than a pickle? HELL Yes!!
Lobster!
- Jennifer
Jenn - you like pickled lobster? Ewww. ;)
10 years or so ago we were talking at work and someone brought up Boo Berry which I loved as a kid. You couldn't find it anywhere around here so I went home and called General Mills and had them send me a case of it. It cost like $70 or something like that and it wasn't quite as good as I remember it. I did of course crap purple for a week.

I like pickled eggs. My neighbor made some recently and we ate the lot. I even like the jarred kind.
Wil - I remember Boo Beer. Count Chokula and Frankenberry as well. I didn't have much of a sweet tooth as a kid, but I remember loving all of those.
DG - Sweet! I bought a case of PBR to store in the fridge for when the sausage arrives. OK...I may have had 4 or 5 PBRs last night, but they were so cold...and so close. I couldn't resist! ;)
there is an awesome bar here in pittsburgh that offers three "boneless chickens" for a buck. yep, they have a giant jar of pickled eggs behind the counter. regardless of how much alcohol i consume, i've never been brave enough to order them. although your review and a bottle of tequila might change my mind. keep me posted!
"Penrose Pickled Pork Sausage" is the best brand around here. They're what we call "Beer Wiennies".
Becky - wow...pickled eggs and tequila. I'm not sure even I am that brave!
Heff - I'll have to buy some and do a taste test. Sounds like a future blog post to me!
All that sounds completely disgusting. Have fun with it! :)
Is it me or did that comment read like spam? Ohhh, wait, it's not in Chinese.
I love pickled food, haven't had a pickled eggs in a while though. I'd easily get through that whole jar in no time and then regret it later.
Faiqa - No, comment moderation hasn't slowed down my spammer. Hesheit still sends me 2 or 3 comments a day. Just not publishing them.
Mik - I'm going to force myself to take it easy with the eggs.
Dude! Seriously? I let the whole day go by, and not one person is going to comment on how gay this post is...what with your talk of pickles and sausages. Just come out with it already...I can read between your homosexual lines. And lastly, me likey! ;)
Doggie - like you aren't psyched to join me in enjoying some pickled sausage this weekend. C'mon! Well, pickled eggs at least. The sausage are still en route.
I like pickles a lot, but the other stuff is so horrible sounding to me!!!
Hey how do you make pickled eggs?
