Oh I wish...

I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)
by Sandi Thorn

Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In 77 and 69 revolution was in the air
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

When the head of state didn't play guitar,
Not everybody drove a car,
When music really mattered and when radio was king,
When accountants didn't have control
And the media couldn't buy your soul
And computers were still scary and we didn’t know everything

[Chorus]

When pop-stars still remained a myth
And ignorance could still be bliss
And when God Saved the Queen she turned a whiter shade of pale
When my mom and dad were in their teens
And anarchy was still a dream
And the only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail

[Chorus]

When record shops were still on top
And vinyl was all that they stocked
And the super info highway was still drifting out in space
Kids were wearing hand me downs,
And playing games meant kick around
And footballers still had long hair and dirt across their face

[Chorus]

I was born too late to a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

I'm assuming she has artfully mixed the two eras I lived through with some kind of sympathetic magic and metaphor because, to be quite honest, when we punked it was a reaction we had when we thought about how stupid we looked with those damn petunias.

So I'm assuming artistic leeway?

And yet, on further review, I have heard my daughters (both in their 30's now) bemoan the fact that there didn't seem to be the same passion about issues and creativity in their "eras". But I would disagree to a certain extent. maybe, politically, they are not as involved or active, but creatively they have stepped right up to the plate like every other generation and knocked it out of the park in their fashion.

And I don't know if they missed so much on the "social action" side. We were pretty full of shit in 1969.

Good tune. Thanks Earl

Doggie - word.

RW - Artistic leeway, yes. Growing up in the Reagan/Bush era might have something to do with it. Her, the singer. Not I. The song, even with the yearning for more important times...kinda, is more about simpler times. When music mattered. That's all.

Limpy - most welcome.

Hmmm well ah dunno, just about music. There's a lot of stuff in there.

"When music mattered". Does anyone else see the irony that this song had NO MUSIC ?

Verdant Earl said...

Slyde - of course you can't.

RW - yeah, I was generalizing.

Heff - Singing isn't music?

I can only suggest a posy to hold to your delicate nostrils when Mr Rankbreath was in the hood.

He'd soon get the hint.

Or a bottle of Listerine on his desk.

Problem solved

That or never ever ever ever work in corporate finance. Death to the soul.
