Kindle me...

I hesitated with the new technology for a long time, but now I'm in.  I'm a Kindle guy.

Here's what happened.  I got Gia a Kindle a few years back.  It was something that she wanted for a long time, and man oh man...she used that Kindle.  I can't even tell you how many books she burned through using it.  She is a voracious reader.  Like I used to be.  Yeah...I don't read nearly as much as I used to read.  Not half as much.  Not a tenth as much.  Not a hundredth as much.

Now we've got a new e-Reader in the house.  You see, I bought Gia an iPad for Christmas.  And the iPad has a Kindle app that works wonderfully.  The back-lighting might eventually cause problems for her, but we still have the Kindle and I hope she switches back and forth between the two to save her eyes.

Right now, I'm reading Christopher Moore's Lamb on the Kindle while she is reading something or other on the iPad.  I can't keep up with her.  She's been bugging me to read Lamb forever now.  And it's really good.  I'm really digging it, but what do I know?

I do know that up next for both of us is the first part of a Rock & Roll trilogy written by a certain someone I know.  It's already purchased and in the queue.  Is that the right term?  Or am I using Netflix terminology when I should be saying "library"?  Ah...who the hell cares.

So hit me with 2 or 3 Kindle suggestions in the comments section if you have them.  I may actually get to them one of these days.

PS - I dig Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Thrillers and Romance novels.  And by "Romance" I mean porn.

In your case, they should call it a "Rekindle!" Glad to see all that passion return for your literacy.

You broach an interesting topic though...in the age of Internet feed readers etc., and this is a legitimate query, don't you think you read more than you're crediting to yourself? I would vote yes for myself. Curious to hear you weigh in.

Aw shucks...

I'll probably get a Kindle this year. Until then, I use the free Kindle for PC application.

why dont you finally get off your ass and read the best fantasy books ever... the game of thrones books?

especially before the series starts on HBO in April....

Doggie - I definitely read more "words" every day now than I ever have in my life because of the Internet. But it's not, ya know, reading...

Steph - I've tried the PC app, and I'm not a fan. But it will do in a pinch.

Slyde - Those are massive, right? Got any suggestions that are a little less of a commitment?

Slyde said...

no.

those books ARE massive..... and awesome.

just like my wee-wee

Slyde - So basically the size of a matchbook cover. Gotcha.

Becky - We make time for the stuff we want to do. You had other reasons for not blogging as well, right?

Congrats on the Kindle.

My wife has talked about wanting a Kindle. She sees me with my iPad and thinks is a cool idea, but way too much going on. Books is all she's interested in.

RW - I still like book books too, but if this contraption gets me back into reading then I'm all for it.

Marty - It's a really cool toy. And they recently dropped the prices on it. (This comment has not been approved by Amazon)

i'll get you into audiobooks yet....

Verdant Earl said...

Slyde - No you won't. What am I a child? I need someone to read a fucking book to me? And I read faster than someone can read aloud, so why would I want to spend the extra time? The only way audio books makes sense is if you are vision impaired. Other than that...read!

Lamb is such a great book!
I still haven't gone the Kindle route. Not sure I ever will - I do loves me some real, tangible books, now.

Sybil - the one thing I would like to turn off on the Kindle is the % completed graphic on the bottom of the page. With a book you know how far you are into the thing by feel. With the Kindle you don't get that.

I got the Nook for Xmas and I promptly downloaded Bill Simmons Book of Basketball which was sold out at Christmas time.

What I didn't realize at the time was that this book was over 700 pages long. I'm about halfway through...

I have both the Nook and the iPad and My Guy thinks I should have returned the Nook. Not a chance. I'm happy to carry around and use both.

Candy - I was intrigued about the Nook when it first came out, but I haven't seen one yet. And Bill Simmons? Ugh...I hate that guy.

One of Us!, One of Us!....welcome to the collective....resistence if futile!

I have been using a Sony E-Reader for about a year now, Just upgraded to the one with Wifi and 3G. It automaticallyl downloads my paper for me each morning through the 3G (International Herald Tribune).

I have been plodding my way through "The Silmarillion" by Tokien on the thing, should have it done by the end of the month. Next up on it is some short story erotica...hubba, hubba.

Lotus - Ugh...I've tried reading The Silmarillion about a dozen times. Never made it past the first 100 pages. Ponderous.

With a little luck and a following wind, you'll be able to read my masterpiece on it one of these days... I'm dedicating this year to finding an agent, then the sky's the limit, mwahahahaaaaaa!

Seriously though, I've started a novel, and it's really good. Just saying. It's called "I, Henchman".

The Jack Reacher series by Lee Child.
The Lucas Davenport series by John Sandford.

Those two are outstanding.

badger - Awesome! I look forward to it.

Adam - My brother-in-law just started with the Jack Reacher books and recommended them to me this weekend. Kewl.
