Comedian

So I had this dream the other night and it was a bit more vivid than most of my dreams. I mean, most of my dreams have me hitting a little white ball over a blue fence at Yankee Stadium or maybe pitching a perfect game. Either way, I'm usually wearing a white suit with blue pinstripes. But the details always seem to escape me. It's all vague in a somewhat glorious way. I, the baseball hero.

But this dream was a little different. I was me, not some dude playing ball for the Yankees. And I was funny. Not funny as I aspire to be here, which is really not very funny at all. But REALLY funny. Like Eddie Murphy back when he was funny...funny.

I was a stand up comedian doing my shtick in front of a loving crowd. And when I woke up I realized that the me in the dream was actually funny. Like someone I would pay to see tell jokes.

I can't tell if the jokes that I told in my dream were ripped off from someone far more creative than I, or if they were actually born in my subconscious. I really don't know.

I'll spare you the actual jokes, but they were about drinking and my cats. Two subjects I know more about than just about anything. So maybe they were my own.  Like I said, I really don't know.

Oh, and I realize that hitting home runs to an adoring crowd at Yankee Stadium and telling jokes to an adoring crowd at some smelly comedy club are really the same thing and that probably says a lot about my own need for some kind of bullshit approval from complete strangers or real folks in my life.

But don't we all want that?  Just me?

Crap.

When I was a bairn I used to dream constantly about living in a large croft overlooking a great loch.

Now I lay awake at night wondering how I'm gonnae stop the damp weather fae destroying the century old wiring which lays behind the stone walls.

It's no approval I seek this end, it's damp-proofing!

Jimmy - My entire life I've always lived near the water, but never on the water. Since I've moved in with G, I know live ON the water...and I fucking love it. Tonight there is a dead calm and a blazing full moon. I couldn't be happier!

Hmm, I have never sought the approval from complete strangers. What is this you speak of?

And then did you cry "You like me. You really like me"?

if its your lifelong dream to play baseball, it MIGHT be a good idea to actually go outside one day and, ya know, actually PLAY a game of baseball..

They have places where people can actually do that, and not just watch others do it on tv....

All I ever have is SEX dreams. Not that I'm complaining.

Wil - you just stay that way then. You are better off.

Avitable - that would have been a fitting ending.

Slyde - Unfortunately I'm not good enought to play in one of those leagues. I did join a softball league for a couple of years, but it isn't the same. Besides, my dream was to play for the Yankees. Not just play with some schmoes in an over-40 league. Dick.

Becky - I do remember them, but I probably won't be posting them. Probably.

Heff - Sex and comedy go hand in hand. At least that has always been my personal experience. Sigh.

I have completely had similar dreams - at least, dreams where I've done or written something amazing and of course I can't replicate it in real life. Irritating!
At least you laughed in your sleep!!

i completely agree with feng!

I used to dream that I was on stage with the Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl.

Verdant Earl said...

Sybil - well, the audience laughed. ;)

Slyde - are you really feng?

Steph - I grew up in a household that adored the Beatles, but it never really took for me. Except for Sgt. Pepper. That album is amazing.

At all.

Nope, it is just you.....I could care less what others think about or earning their approval....
