Thinking about going to see Kevin Smith's independent "horror" flick Red State next month when it premieres at Radio City Music Hall.
I think it's pretty cool the way that Smith is handling the distribution of this flick. He's going out on the road with it for the next year or so and he is going to be showing it in cities all over. Then he is gonna come out and chat with the audience about it. And Kevin Smith talking about movies is one of my favorite things in the world! Even if actually watching his recent efforts hasn't been quite as much fun.
I guess he got sick of the recent critical reaction to his flicks, and he's admittedly the most sensitive filmmaker out there. First everyone wanted him to do something other than his View Askewverse stuff. Then everyone wanted him to go back to making those films. It drove him nuts.
And then he decided that it was silly to have a production/distribution company spend all the money to market the film when he could just do it himself through new media/social networks. Pretty cool. So he has re-invented the model that filmmakers used back before the big Hollywood machine took over.
I think the movie business can use a breath of fresh air like this. Good for Kevin Smith.

I'm very curious to see him tackle a movie that seems to be so completely different than what he's done before. I think his marketing plan is pretty cool, too. I hope it works.
I know you heard him on the WTF podcast. Do you ever listen to the Nerdist? He was a guest on there too, and it was some really funny stuff.
Unfortunately, I haven't heard the best reviews of the movie - it's apparently NOT a horror movie at all.
Fly, Fatboy, fly!
Paticus - I haven't heard him on Nerdist, but he was on Ron & Fez last week (Unmasked or Ron Bennington Interviews) and he says it was the best interview he ever did. You should check it out.
Avitable - That's why I put horror in quotation marks. not sure what it is supposed to be.
Slyde - exactly.
I just love him, in general.
He's like the ex boy friend I never had and I want him to do well in life.
He gets it so close to right, most of the time. But he seems to have trouble executing the vision as a whole. I don't know, it's like he needs a new muse or a new creative partner to be the sprinkles to his sundae.
I love Kevin Smith, but I kind of agree with Annabelle.
I volunteer to be his new muse. :)
I was at the Red State premier at Sundance, but wasn't able to get a ticket to the movie. But ran into Kevin outside when the Westboro protestors were there.
I totally and behind him with this distribution model. He's up front, he's honest about what kind of money would be wasted on a film that doesn't have mainstream appeal. It's totally taking a page from the early days and making it current.
I would love to go to one of the screenings, but the closest to me is 9 hours away. I may have to wait until October. I hope you get to go.
Based on the trailer, this actually looks like and interesting film.
Annabelle - Heya! And I think weed is his new muse. ;)
Sybil - Next time I see him, I'll tell him about you. :)
Marty - You saw those Westboro fuckers up close and personal? Ugh. I'm not a violent man, but...
Lotus - I hope so.
I don't appreciate the steep ticket prices for the movie/Q+A tour. I've already seen Kevin live, and I'm pretty sure if I needed to be in the same room with him again I could make that happen if I whined enough. I'm waiting for this to drop in theaters like a regular movie so I can watch it.

Oh. I see. I must be approved. Why would that be......... maybe.... SATAN?!
Poppy - sorry about the moderation. I hate it, but I had to put it in for older posts because of a persistent spammer I had.
