Comfort food

You know what tastes great after an epic night of drinking?

Sausage gravy and biscuits.  Oh, man...as soon as I saw that it was breakfast special at the diner this morning I knew I didn't have to look any further. You don't get a good low country breakfast like this just any old day here in the Northeast.

So how do you follow that up later on in the day?

A big sauerbraten meal cooked by yours truly.  I prepared the meat on Tuesday, so it had been marinating in my secret pickling blend for most of a week.  Three hours in the oven covered in the marinade, sliced to perfection and served with a ginger snap gravy.  My mother made some mac & cheese and my sister made some brats and sauerkraut.  Everything was delicious.

Now I'm gonna sleep for a week or so.  Woof.

That second dish looks yum, the first, not so much, for some reason biscuits and gravy just doesn't do it for me.

I had friends in college who loved to eat biscuits and gravy either when drunk or hung over, and I must admit, I never understood it. I can't help it...It looks like someone threw up on a breakfast plate

Oh my GOD that food looks so good right now. I am not hungover!
So can you post the recipe for that dish you made?! It looks unbelievable!

Mik - Oh, I agree that it can and does look awful. But the taste...

2abes - a little of both.

Paticus - see comment for Mik above.

Sybil - Basically here is what I did: Took a four pound bottom round roast. Jabbed a bunch of deep holes in it. Then marinated it in 1 cup of cider vinegar, 1 cup of red wine vinegar, 1 cup of water, some peppercorns, all-spice, cloves, chopped carrots, chopped onion and a bay leaf for 4-5 days. Then you remove the meat from the marinade, pat dry, dredge with a little flour and braise on all sides in a little vegetable oil. Then it goes in the oven at 375 for 3-4 hours in a covered Dutch oven or roaster pan along with the marinade. After it is done you remove the meat from the marinade to let cool. Then you drain the marinade and use the just the juice to make a gravy using gingersnap cookies to thicken the stock. Slice the meat against the grain (it will fall apart because it is so tender if you don't) and heap a generous portion of gravy on top. Choke it down with an Oktoberfest beer. Tada!

I love biscuits and gravy. That plate of food looks so good.

And yes, you are right, that is perfect after a night of drinking.

Savannah - sometimes ya gotta splurge.

DG - knew you would understand. ;)

Wil - I could go for it all over again!

Becky - Don't blame me. Blame the diner I went to yesterday morning.

Jenn - the grease does do wonders for the belly the next day, don't it?

Marty - the only thing that could have made it better was a full 8 hours or so of sleep beforehand. Not the 3-4 that I actually got.

your like some type of culinary genius.

wow. i thought a few recipes were like a fluke but DAYUM EARL!!

so, had fish sticks, minute rice with pineapple chunks. because that's how the Hall rolls until I don't have chase a two year old around whilst cooking.

someday, o yes, someday I will partake of the complicated and labor intensive recipes. :)

Jimmy - hoping you the best in your quest!

Poppstar - Just sayin, eh? ;)

Holly - I'm all about the cookin'! And it really isn't that hard. About a half hour of prep work and then a whole lot of waiting. The gravy is sooo easy.
