After a long fight against a pre-Winter cold, I'm back. And meaner than ever.
Okay...maybe not.
But I am back, after missing most of the last week or so in the Blogosphere. Sure, a little Twitter here, a little commenting there. But it's not the same. I even had to miss the last episode of Just Talking to the Cornfield on Sunday night because I lost my voice after an ill-advised bout of drinking over the weekend. Well, it was probably the cold night air that did me in, but I think the booze may have had something to do with it as well.
Oh, I'll be reviewing the booze over here shortly. You are gonna dig it.
The Colonel and I were supposed to discuss some of our guilty pleasure films/books/tv/whatever on that episode. And we probably still will whenever we find time to record another show. We even share one in common that we were going to use as a discussion point. Notting Hill. Yeah, both of us are hopeless romantics at heart. Especially when the romance involves the world's most famous actress (as played by Julia Roberts...hehe), and an idyllic setting like the one in the film. Cry us a river.
But the ultimate guilty pleasure movie for most men I know is Road House. Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliot, Ben Gazzara. An American rip-off of the classic kung fu films I grew up. Lone warrior wanders into a town that is persecuted by a powerful warlord. Distancing himself, at first, the warrior eventually falls for the town and its people and takes measures to bring down the evil warlord.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Happens with me.
Anyway.
So what are some of your guilty pleasures? Movies, books, magazines, trashy talk-shows, soap operas? What?
Hit me.

Notting Hill is kind of a guilty pleasure for me as well. Doesn't hurt that it takes place in one of my favorite parts of London. :-)
I truly dislike Notting Hill. Don't mind the film too much though.
Guilty pleasures, they are so, so many... My main one is a TV thing. I can'yt get enough of Biggest Loser, but it has to be the US version of the show. I dig it like the contestant dig eating cakes. Fucking love that show, and I do not know why. I think it's particularly odd that it's only the US version I really love. The others are ok, but the US one... There's something different about it, and it's not just that they are so much fatter.
I approve of both your choices! I'm gonna have to think on this one, though. After I nap. Or maybe while I nap.
I like Project Runway because I really think design is an art form like music and painting and writing. I can't say I'm a big fan of all the catty behavior, cuz I'm really not. But I like to see the process and the creativity.
And there's a whole genre of books I don't think I've ever talked about that I can't get enough of... adventure books. Like Shackelton's adventures in Antarctica, guys being stranded on a raft in the middle of the ocean. The first round-the-world sail race in the late 60's. True stories like that. I consume them.
Okay I'm weird. I never heard of Notting Hill so, sorry.
For me, my biggest embarassment that i just cant get enough of is "The Bad Girls Club".
And i love Notting Hill too.
"I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her".
sniff........
I thought the true point of Road House was getting hot nurses naked on your roof?
Dave2 - Looks like a great neighborhood.
badger - Ugh, I hate that show.
Sybil - Napping is a guilty pleasure, right?
RW - I love adventure books like that as well. I'll go even further and enjoy adventure books based on real events like that, but then fictionalized to include...oh say...a supernatural element. See The Terror by Dan Simmons as an example.
Slyde - I still can't even find what freaking channel that show is on!?!
Uncool - C'mon, dude...she was a DOCTOR. Have you even SEEN the film? ;)
Shit, everything I like is a guilty pleasure.
Notting Hill is actually one of my favorite movies, guilty pleasure or not. So I guess I'm with good guilty pleasure company here. Slyde quoted one of my favorite lines from the movie.
As for other media types, I actually don't mind Nickelback. Granted, it's not something I listen to all the time, but even with all of the made fun of song writing slams they get, I enjoy it.
Avitable - That's what I like to hear!
Marty - I love Notting Hill. LOVE IT! But I hate that line. HATE IT! Julia Robert's delivery of it kinda kills the scene for me. Which is a shame, because I love the rest of that scene.
Porn.
and mesh net underwear.
Heff - Never feel guilty about the porn. The other thing, well...
