A-Roid

Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire. Yeah, I know...their is no "proof" that they cheated. Well, there might be some proof on Bonds. But none of the allegations have surprised me. I watched Sosa and McGwire in 1998. You knew they were using something. Everyone knew it. And when Bonds showed up at camp the next year looking like a Marvel superhero, everyone knew he was using something. HGH or steroids. Whatever.

Roger Clemens didn't shock me. The guy seems like a Grade A asshole and someone who would do anything to perform better. Plus he threw a bat handle at Mike Piazza. Who does that?

Jose Canseco (admitted), Jason Giambi (admitted), Rafael Palmiero (caught), Luis Gonzalez (rumors), Gary Sheffield (delusional), Jay Gibbons (caught), Ken Caminiti (admitted and dead), Andy Pettitte (admitted and born again), Miguel Tejada (implicated and, frankly...older)...the list goes on. And none of them have surprised me or particularly disappointed me.

I'm angry, shocked and thoroughly disappointed in the news today that Alex Rodriguez failed a steroids test in 2003. He may be a prima donna and a jackass, but I always thought he was clean.

I don't give a crap that it was part of a test program to determine how wide-spread the steroids problem was in baseball. I don't care that there were no penalties in 2003 for steroid use. I don't care that he is the only one out of the 104 players that tested positive for steroids whose name was leaked to the media. I don't if he only used steroids one time, as I'm sure he will claim when he finally comes clean. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care.

But this was supposed to be the clean guy who would take back the HR record from dirty, dirty Barry Bonds in a few years. The guy who was so talented right out of High School that he would never need to juice. The guy who told Katie Couric on 60 Minutes that he never used steroids or HGH, never considered it and never would.

He's a cheat. He's a juicer. He's a liar. Once. Always.

So that's it. I will never believe any of them anymore. I will not be surprised when the next names are revealed. I don't care who it is. Chase Utley, David Ortiz, Tim Lincecum, Albert Pujols, Hanley Ramirez, CC Sabathia, Mariano Rivera...they are all suspects. And none of it will ever shock me again.

Fuckers!

I have yet to read the whole post, but wanted to insert a pre-comment here:

The title sounds like something that hurts when you sit on it.

...

That was all.

Every year it seems more widespread. I guess these guys can't keep up without "a little help from their friends." It's a sad reality.

Don't even get me started on steroids. They are big business and people get shot frequently here for selling them on someone else's turf.

I have no problem with it. None. It's entertainment. It's business. Anything to get asses in seats by the masses. I don't care how many "purists" get up on their soap-box to preach about the integrity of the game. That was sold to the highest bidder a long, long time ago. It's all about the home run. The slam dunk. The "whatever garners an Oooh or Ahhhh!" Hopefully, you'll pick up a $25 program, and $5 hot dog, and a $10 beer...all after spending hundreds on tickets for you and the kiddies. After making it rain, I'd want to see a fucking home run too! Mark me down in the "I don't give a chevrolet or apple pie fuck" category on this one. And the fact that it's become an issue for government... simply despicable. Plus, Hulk Hogan taught me a long time ago that in order to be a real American, all I have to do is say my prayers and take my vitamins. Somebody pass me my bible and syringes.

Becky - when Bonds played for the Pirates he was the best I had ever seen and very underrated.

MikeB - sad indeed.

Michelle- well, I would never want them to be role models anyway, but that is another story.

JB - Wow! Just like any other street drug, eh?

WLC - The government should have never gotten involved at all. That is heinous while a war (two wars) and an economic crisis are hanging over our heads. But I'm a baseball purist and I hate these revelations with all my fiber.

This is only one of the smallest reasons that I don't follow MLB anymore.

I've heard several players say upwards of 60-70% of players were taking some sort of enhancement drug(s).

It's a shame the other 30-40% are going to be dragged into this. It's a shame that fans and sportswriters have to place a label on anyone ... or everyone.

Consider it "The Steroid Era" and let it go.

Home Run Baker led the AL in 1914 with 9 home runs. You can't compare "Deadball Era" players to players of today. You can only compare them against their peers.

Is that the end of the world? I don't think so.

I think that there is such a thing as karma....you can only imagine what jumped Madonna snatch to his privates that will follow him around for the rest of his life.

Evyl - I hear ya. The strike in 94 hurt a lot too.

ajooja - I know, but the problem is that there are those die-hard fans (like myself) that consider some numbers to be sacred. 60, 755, 300 (wins)...these all mean something to me and to the history of the game. While metrics like OPS+ and Win Shares can help one to understand how good a player like Joe Morgan was (playing in a depressed offensive environment), the counting stats mean something too. So, for me, the steroids era has cheapened some of those counting stats.

Bruce - word.
